Biography

I, Rustem Nureev, was born in Moscow in 1950. After finishing High School No. 2, I entered the Faculty of Economics at Moscow State University and graduated from there with honours in 1972. From 1972 to 1975, I studied as a postgraduate at the Faculty of Economics at MSU. Upon finishing the postgraduate course, I worked at the Department of Political Economy, a subdivision of the Faculty of Economics at MSU. In 1977, I obtained the Candidate of Economic Science degree by defending my thesis titled Principles of Study of Production Relations in Pre-Capitalist Structures (in the context of discussions on “the Asian way of production”). Starting from 1983, I was an associate professor at the Department of Political Economy, at the Faculty of Economics, MSU. In 1988, I finished the doctorate course at MSU. In 1990, I obtained the Doctor of Economic Science degree by defending my thesis titled Peculiarities of Interaction between Productive Forces and Production Relations in Pre-Capitalist Structures at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

In 1993, I changed my job and, up to 1996, worked as a vice rector and the First Vice Rector at the Higher School of Economics. In 1993, I became head of the Department of Economic Theory at the HSE. In 2002, I founded the Department of Institutional Economics at Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics. In 2003, using the facilities of the Department of Economic Theory, I established the Section for Economic Theory and in the context of its work became head of the Department of Institutional Economics at the HSE, and, in 2007, I became head of the Department of Economic Analysis of Organizations and Markets at the HSE.

In 1993, I was given the title of Professor of Economics at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, Moscow. In 1997, I was elected one of the tenured professors at the HSE. Currently, I am a co-chairman of the Board of Tenured Professors and a member of the HSE Academic Council. In 2000, I was awarded the title of Honoured Worker of the Russian Higher Education.

On several occasions, I attended the courses of the Summer School at the London School of Economics and took part in the seminars dedicated to the methods of teaching (Civil Service Retraining College, UK), to institutional analysis (Ronald Coase Institute, Berkeley, CA), public choice theory (G. Mason University, Washington, USA). In 2001 – 2002, I attended the scientific practical courses at the IRIS Center of the University of Maryland, USA, in 2003 – the practical courses at the London School of Economics, in 2005 – 2007 – at Free University of Berlin, Germany, and in 2007 – at the University of Warwick, UK.

Since 2013 he headed the department of economics at the University of Finance under the Government of the Russian Federation

At present, I lecture and hold seminars in the courses of Economic Theory, Institutional Economics, Public Choice Theory, Development Economics for Market Economy Formation Models, and Comparative Analysis of Economic Systems at departments of economics and those of federal and municipal management at the International College of Economics and Finance, at the Institute of Banking, and at the International Logistics Center.

On a regular basis, I travel to various universities of Russia where I give my courses of lectures. In the period of 2001 – 2008, I lectured and reported at the universities of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Tambov, Voronezh, Kuban, Kursk, at Novosobirsk Technical University and Southern Federal University.

I am married and have two children born in 1986 and 1987.
